Walk through any grocery store or browse online for eco-conscious alternatives to single-use plastic, and you will find bags labeled "biodegradable" everywhere. The word sounds reassuring. It implies the bag will break down harmlessly, return to nature, and leave nothing behind. But when you look for the science behind that claim, there often is not much there. Biodegradable is not a regulated term for plastic products. No independent body audits the claim before it appears on packaging.
