- Check for PFAS. Some compostable products, particularly fiber-based ones, may contain PFAS added for water or grease resistance. Always check certification rather than taking a "PFAS free" claim at face value from any brand. One thing to keep in mind regardless of certification: compostable materials are designed for active composting environments, not landfills. Biodegradation occurs significantly slower in landfill conditions due to limited oxygen and moisture. If a grow bag ends up in regular trash headed to a landfill, it won't compost the way it would in an actual composting system.
