Understanding Certifications Before You Buy Anything

California has moved to address this with AB 1201, which requires products labeled compostable to be third-party certified, but nationally, the labeling landscape is still inconsistent.

The other issue is PFAS contamination. PFAS are a group of synthetic chemicals that do not break down in the environment. Some compostable fiber products, like bowls, plates, and certain bags, have historically contained PFAS to achieve grease resistance. When those products go through composting, the PFAS persist in the finished compost and end up in soil. BPI no longer certifies compostable fiber products with intentionally added fluorine, which is a meaningful step. But consumers cannot assume every product claiming to be compostable is PFAS free. Some compostable products may contain PFAS, so always check certification.
