A passive pile may take six months to a year.

Composting Garden Waste: Speeding Up the Process

A few practical strategies make a meaningful difference in how fast your pile finishes.

Shred or chop materials before adding them. Smaller pieces have more surface area for microbes to work on. A pile of whole autumn leaves takes much longer to break down than the same leaves run over once with a lawnmower. Add a compost activator if your pile is slow to heat up.
