Walk down any grocery store aisle today and you will find bags, wraps, and pouches covered in leaf logos, earthy color palettes, and words like "plant-based," "eco-conscious," and "naturally breaks down." Some of these products are genuinely certified compostable. Many are not. Without knowing what compostable bags certification actually looks like, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference from the packaging alone.

This is not a minor labeling issue. Fake or uncertified "compostable" products contaminate composting systems, damage soil quality, and mislead consumers who are genuinely trying to do the right thing. Knowing how to read a bag before you buy it is one of the most practical sustainability skills you can develop.

What Real Compostable Bags Certification Actually Means

Certified compostable is not a vague claim. It is a specific, testable, third-party verified status. For a product to carry a legitimate compostability certification, it must meet defined scientific standards for how it breaks down, how fast it breaks down, and what it leaves behind.

There are two main standards to know:

  • ASTM D6400: The US standard for industrial compostability. Requires 90% disintegration within 84 days under controlled conditions, including temperatures of 55 to 60 degrees Celsius, high humidity, and active microbial activity in a commercial composting facility.
  • EN 13432: The European equivalent. Requires 90% disintegration within 90 days under similar industrial composting conditions. Widely recognized by composting programs globally.

Both standards require that a product breaks down into carbon dioxide, water, and organic matter with no toxic residue and no microplastics remaining. Meeting these standards is not self-declared. Products must be independently tested and verified before any certification is granted.

For home composting, the relevant standard is TUV OK Compost HOME, which allows for breakdown at ambient temperatures in a standard backyard compost environment, with 90% disintegration required within 180 days.

The Two Certifications Worth Trusting on a Bag

When you pick up a bag at the store, you are looking for specific certification marks, not general claims.

BPI Certification

BPI, the Biodegradable Products Institute, is the leading certification body for compostable products in the United States. BPI certification requires independent third-party laboratory testing. It is not a self-declared claim. A product must demonstrate compliance with ASTM D6400 before the BPI mark is granted. If you see the BPI logo on a product, it has been tested and verified.

Most US municipal composting programs that accept compostable bags specifically look for BPI certification. It is the clearest signal a bag is acceptable for curbside composting. Always confirm with your local program, since policies vary by city, but BPI certification is the standard most programs use as their benchmark.

TUV Austria Certifications

TUV Austria issues several marks depending on the composting environment:

  • TUV OK Compost INDUSTRIAL: Confirms the product meets EN 13432 and is suitable for industrial composting facilities.
  • TUV OK Compost HOME: Confirms the product will break down in a standard backyard compost bin at ambient temperatures.

A product can carry both marks if it has been tested for both environments, which is the strongest indication that the product will perform correctly across composting scenarios.

What Marketing Claims Cannot Replace Certification

"Plant-Based"

A product made from plant-based materials is not automatically compostable. Plant-based refers to the source of the raw materials, not how the product breaks down. It will biodegrade more slowly in landfill conditions due to limited oxygen and moisture, and it is not designed for active composting environments.

"Naturally Decomposes" or "Breaks Down Naturally"

A phrase like "breaks down naturally" with no certification standard attached is not a compostability claim. It is marketing language designed to create the impression of environmental benefit without any obligation to prove it.

"Biodegradable"

This one matters a lot, and it causes significant confusion at the shelf. Biodegradable and compostable are not the same thing. Biodegradable is a vague claim with no required certification or testing standard behind it. There is no independent body certifying biodegradability the way BPI certifies compostability. A product can call itself biodegradable without demonstrating any specific rate of breakdown, any specific end condition, or any absence of harmful residue.

California actually prohibits "biodegradable" on plastic products precisely because the claim cannot be verified. If you see only "biodegradable" on a bag with no accompanying certification mark, treat it as an unverified marketing claim.

Leaf Logos and Green Color Palettes

Design is not certification. A bag printed in brown and green with a leaf pattern and a tagline about the environment has no legal obligation to be certified compostable. This is called a "look-alike" product, and it is one of the specific problems California's AB 1201 law was written to address. The law requires that products labeled compostable must be third-party certified, prohibits deceptive look-alike designs, and bans compostable labeling on products containing PFAS.

The PFAS Issue You Should Know About

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a class of synthetic chemicals used in some food packaging and compostable fiber products like plates, bowls, and paper bags. They are persistent, meaning they do not break down easily, and they can contaminate finished compost and soil even when the product itself appears to have broken down.

Some compostable products may contain PFAS. Always check certification carefully. BPI no longer certifies compostable fiber products with intentionally added fluorine, which is a meaningful step forward for the certification system.

Why This Matters Beyond Your Own Shopping Cart

When uncertified products enter composting streams, they cause real problems. Industrial composting facilities sort materials by certification. An uncertified bag that looks compostable but is not will either be pulled and sent to landfill, or it will contaminate a batch of finished compost. Contaminated compost can introduce plastics, PFAS, or other residues into agricultural soil.

Home composters are not immune either. A bag that claims to break down at home but carries no TUV OK Compost HOME certification may sit in your bin for years, disrupt the balance of your pile, or leave fragments behind in your finished compost.

The individual choice to buy certified rather than just "green-looking" products is a direct contribution to keeping composting infrastructure functional. Composting programs in cities across the US are genuinely fragile. Contamination drives up processing costs and, in some cases, causes programs to shut down or change their acceptance policies. Certification is not just a personal feel-good measure. It is what makes shared composting infrastructure work.

How to Shop With Confidence

The good news is that real certification is not hard to find once you know what you are looking for. BPI and TUV Austria marks are recognizable, and legitimate certified products will always display them clearly. Brands with genuine certification do not hide it.

If you are buying compostable food bags for kitchen scraps, or larger bags for curbside pickup, start with the certification mark and verify from there. Do not let a leaf logo, a plant-based claim, or a tagline about "nature" substitute for actual third-party verification.

The certification system exists because the science of composting is specific and the standards are meaningful. ASTM D6400, EN 13432, BPI, TUV Austria. These are not bureaucratic hoops. They are the evidence that a bag will do what it says when it gets to a composting facility. That is the only thing worth buying.
