It's one of the most common composting problems, and it tells you something specific is off with your pile. The good news is that it's fixable. The less good news is that ignoring it will make things worse, and your neighbors will eventually notice.
Ammonia smell in compost comes from excess nitrogen. When your pile has too much nitrogen-rich material breaking down without enough carbon to balance it, the decomposition process releases ammonia gas instead of processing that nitrogen into useful compounds. It's not just unpleasant. It actually means your compost is losing valuable nutrients into the air rather than retaining them in the finished material.

The Real Cause of Compost Ammonia Smell: Nitrogen Overload
Composting is a biological process driven by microorganisms that need a balance of carbon and nitrogen to do their job. Carbon gives them energy. Nitrogen gives them protein to build cell mass. When that ratio is off, specifically when there's far more nitrogen than carbon, the microbes can't use it all. The excess nitrogen escapes as ammonia gas. That's the smell.
The ideal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for active composting sits somewhere around 25:1 to 30:1. Most people don't measure this precisely, and you don't need to. Poor Aeration
Microorganisms that process nitrogen efficiently need oxygen. When a pile gets compacted or isn't turned regularly, oxygen can't penetrate to the center. Pile Size

How to Fix Ammonia Smell in Your Compost

Add Carbon-Rich Material Immediately
This is step one. Add a substantial amount of dry brown material, dried leaves, shredded cardboard, or straw. Don't add a thin layer. Add enough to visibly mix into the pile. A good starting point is roughly two to three parts browns for every one part greens you've recently added. Mix it thoroughly rather than just layering it on top.
Turn the Pile
Turning does two things. It introduces oxygen, which supports aerobic microbial activity and reduces ammonia production. Does Ammonia Smell Mean Your Compost Is Ruined?
No. Ammonia smell is a sign of imbalance, not failure. The pile isn't dead. The microorganisms are still active. What they need is a better environment to work in, and you can provide that by adjusting the inputs and improving aeration.
Finished compost has a completely different smell. It should smell earthy, like soil after rain, sometimes slightly mushroomy. If your compost reaches that point, the ammonia issue is resolved. What You Put Into the Pile Matters More Than You Think
A lot of compost smell problems start at the collection stage, before material even reaches the bin. Food scraps that sit in a warm kitchen for several days before being added to the outdoor pile are already partially decomposed and concentrated. They hit the pile with a burst of nitrogen and moisture that can overwhelm it.
Collecting food scraps in a way that contains moisture and limits premature breakdown helps. When the Smell Isn't Ammonia
Not all compost smell is the same. Ammonia has a specific sharp, acrid quality. If your pile smells more like sulfur or rotten eggs, that's a different issue, typically anaerobic decomposition caused by compaction and excess moisture rather than nitrogen overload specifically. The fix is similar in some ways, better aeration and drier material, but the cause is distinct.
