Industrial Composting vs Home Composting: What's the Difference?

If you've ever bought a bag labeled "compostable" and wondered whether you can toss it in your backyard bin, you're not alone. The question of industrial composting vs home composting trips up a lot of people, and for good reason. These are two genuinely different processes with different requirements, different timelines, and different certifications. A bag that qualifies for one doesn't automatically qualify for the other. Getting this wrong doesn't just mean a bag sitting in your compost pile longer than expected. It can mean the bag doesn't break down properly at all.

How Industrial Composting Works

Industrial composting, sometimes called commercial composting, happens at a managed facility. These aren't just bigger versions of your backyard bin. They operate under tightly controlled conditions that are deliberately maintained to accelerate breakdown.

The key conditions are heat, humidity, and microbial activity. Industrial facilities operate at sustained temperatures between 55 and 60 degrees Celsius. That level of heat is not something a backyard pile naturally reaches, and it's not something you can easily replicate at home without significant effort and equipment. The microbes doing the work thrive in that heat range and break down organic material far faster than they would at ambient temperature.

The benchmark standard in the United States is ASTM D6400. In Europe, it's EN 13432. Both require that a product achieve 90% disintegration within a set timeframe. Under ASTM D6400, that window is 84 days. Under EN 13432, it's 90 days. These aren't loose guidelines. They're the specific, testable thresholds that a product must meet before it can earn certification.

BPI certification, which is what you'll see on most certified compostable products in the US market, requires independent third-party laboratory testing to confirm compliance with ASTM D6400. A brand cannot simply declare their product industrially compostable. They have to prove it before the certification is granted. TUV Austria also certifies products to the industrial standard under their OK Compost INDUSTRIAL designation.

Most municipal curbside compost programs, where they exist, are connected to industrial facilities. If your city picks up food scraps at the curb, the material almost certainly goes to a commercial composting site. That matters when you're deciding which certified compostable bags are appropriate for your program.

How Home Composting Works

Home composting is slower, cooler, and far more variable. A backyard compost pile doesn't have climate controls, mechanized turning schedules, or a steady supply of heat-generating microbial mass. What it has is organic material, ambient outdoor temperature, whatever moisture it gets from the environment, and time.

The standard for home compostability is TUV OK Compost HOME. Products certified to this standard must achieve 90% disintegration within 180 days under ambient temperature conditions. That's twice the timeframe of industrial composting, and the conditions required are meaningfully different. This standard accounts for the reality that a backyard pile can't sustain the temperatures a commercial facility can.

This is the certification you need to look for if you're composting at home. Not ASTM D6400. Not BPI certification alone. TUV OK Compost HOME is specifically designed for the conditions a home composter can realistically provide.

Here's the part that catches people off guard. A product that is certified for industrial composting is not automatically certified for home composting. These are separate certifications testing for performance under separate conditions. A bag that breaks down in 84 days at 55 to 60 degrees Celsius may not break down reliably in a backyard pile that fluctuates between 15 and 30 degrees. The chemistry and microbiology are different enough that the two certifications test for genuinely different things.

Why the Conditions Matter

Temperature is the most obvious variable, but it's not the only one. Moisture levels, oxygen exposure, the diversity of microbial communities, and the physical turning of compost material all affect how quickly and completely a certified compostable product breaks down.

Industrial facilities manage all of these variables actively. Home composting does not. This is not a criticism of home composting. It's just the reality of what each system can and cannot control.

When a compostable bag ends up in conditions it wasn't designed for, the results vary. A bag certified only to ASTM D6400 placed in a backyard pile might partially break down, break down very slowly, or persist in recognizable form well past the point where you'd expect it to be gone. None of those outcomes are ideal, and none are what the certification was designed to deliver.

This is also why disposal matters beyond just buying certified compostable products. Composting only begins when a product is exposed to the right combination of heat, moisture, and microbial activity. Sitting in a storage cabinet, or in a trash bin that never reaches a compost facility, a certified compostable bag doesn't degrade in any meaningful timeframe. The conditions have to be right. Certification tells you what conditions the product is designed for. It doesn't override physics.

One other thing worth saying plainly: compostable bags are designed for active composting environments. Biodegradation occurs significantly slower in landfill conditions due to limited oxygen and moisture. If a compostable bag ends up in landfill, it's not going to perform the way it was designed to. That's not a compostable bag problem specifically. It's a function of what landfills are and how they operate.

How to Know Which Standard Your Bag Meets

Read the certification marks on the packaging. This is genuinely the most reliable method. Here's what to look for and what each one means in practice.

  • BPI certified: Meets ASTM D6400. Designed for industrial composting. Accepted by most US municipal curbside compost programs that accept certified compostable bags. Not a home composting certification.
  • TUV OK Compost INDUSTRIAL: Meets EN 13432. Also designed for industrial composting conditions. Common on products sold in European markets or those complying with EU standards.
  • TUV OK Compost HOME: Certified for home composting conditions at ambient temperature. This is the certification that actually backs up a home compostable claim. If this mark isn't present, don't assume the bag will perform in your backyard bin.

Some products carry both an industrial certification and TUV OK Compost HOME. That means they've been tested and verified under both sets of conditions. That's the most flexible option if you want to use the same bag across different disposal scenarios.

Products that carry no third-party certification at all, but are labeled as compostable or biodegradable, are a different problem. "Biodegradable" is a vague claim with no required certification or testing standard behind it. It tells you almost nothing verifiable about how a product breaks down or under what conditions. California has actually prohibited the use of "biodegradable" on plastic products precisely because the claim cannot be verified in any meaningful way. Certified compostable and biodegradable are not the same thing, and they're not interchangeable.

Some compostable products may also contain PFAS, which are chemical compounds that persist through composting and contaminate soil. Always check certification. If you have a backyard compost pile and want to compost at home, look specifically for TUV OK Compost HOME certification. Don't assume that BPI certified or ASTM D6400 compliant products will break down correctly in your home pile. They were not designed for those conditions and have not been tested under them.

If you have access to both, products certified under both the industrial and home composting standards give you the most flexibility. You can use the same bag and route it to whichever composting channel is available.

If you have neither option readily available, this is worth knowing too. A certified compostable bag that ends up in a general waste bin headed to landfill is not going to deliver the environmental outcome you're hoping for. Composting requires composting conditions. The certification is a guarantee of performance under the right circumstances, not a guarantee that the bag disappears wherever it ends up.

The good news is that access to composting programs is expanding. More cities are adding curbside organics collection. More people are setting up home bins. Choosing certified compostable products now, and understanding which certification applies to which system, means you're ready to use those programs correctly when they're available to you.
