Home compostable materials follow a different standard, TUV OK Compost HOME, which allows breakdown at ambient outdoor temperatures. The timeframe is longer, up to 180 days, but no industrial facility is required.

When you're choosing a garden bed liner and the packaging says "compostable," look for one of these certifications. If there's no third-party certification listed, the claim is unverifiable.

Compostable Garden Bed Liner Options That Actually Work

Cardboard

Plain corrugated cardboard is one of the most practical and widely available compostable liner options for raised beds and in-ground borders.
