Biodegradable vs Compostable: What's the Real Difference?

Walk down any grocery aisle and you'll see products labeled "biodegradable" and "compostable" like the terms are interchangeable. They're not. Understanding the difference between biodegradable vs compostable isn't just semantics. It's the difference between a regulated environmental claim and marketing fluff that means almost nothing.

Here's what most people don't know: biodegradable has no legal definition, no required testing standard, and no certification process. Anyone can slap it on packaging.

What Does Biodegradable Actually Mean?

Biodegradable sounds like a positive thing. It suggests that something will break down naturally over time. And technically, that's true. Everything is biodegradable given enough time. A plastic bottle will eventually degrade. It'll just take 450 years and leave behind microplastics in the process.

That's the problem. Biodegradable doesn't specify how long breakdown takes, under what conditions it happens, or what's left behind. There's no testing required. No certification body. No independent verification. It's a word companies can use without proving anything.

Some biodegradable products break down in weeks. Others take decades. Some leave toxic residue or microplastics. There's no way to know because there's no standard.

The Federal Trade Commission has guidelines discouraging unqualified biodegradable claims, but enforcement is inconsistent. Most brands ignore the guidance entirely. They know consumers associate "biodegradable" with environmental responsibility, so they use it freely.

California took a harder line. In 2021, the state prohibited the use of biodegradable, degradable, and decomposable on plastic products. The reasoning? These claims can't be substantiated and mislead consumers into thinking plastic will harmlessly disappear. It won't.

What Does Compostable Actually Mean?

Compostable is a completely different animal. It's not a vague suggestion. It's a verifiable claim backed by scientific testing and third-party certification.

For a product to be labeled compostable, it must meet strict standards like ASTM D6400 in the United States or EN 13432 in Europe. These standards require that a product:

  • Breaks down into carbon dioxide, water, and organic matter
  • Disintegrates within a specific timeframe (typically 84 to 90 days in industrial composting)
  • Leaves no toxic residue
  • Leaves no microplastics

To prove all this, products undergo independent laboratory testing. If they pass, they earn certification from organizations like BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) or TUV Austria. This isn't a self-declared claim. It's verified.

Compostable products only break down under active composting conditions: heat, moisture, oxygen, and microbial activity. That usually means an industrial composting facility, though some products are certified for home composting, which happens at lower temperatures over about six months.

Here's the critical part: compostable doesn't mean a product will break down anywhere. Toss a certified compostable bag in a landfill and it won't decompose. Modern landfills are sealed environments with no oxygen, minimal moisture, and no microbial activity. They're designed to contain waste, not compost it.

Compostable products need to be disposed of correctly: in a curbside composting program, at an industrial facility, or in a backyard compost bin if they're home-compost certified. Without those conditions, they're just sitting there like everything else.

Why the Difference Matters

The distinction between biodegradable vs compostable isn't academic. It affects what happens to the products you buy, whether they actually reduce environmental impact, and whether the companies selling them are being honest.

Biodegradable claims give brands a green halo without requiring proof. It's greenwashing in its purest form. A company can call a plastic bag biodegradable, charge a premium, and leave consumers thinking they've made an eco-friendly choice. Meanwhile, that bag could take decades to break down and leave microplastics in the soil.

Compostable claims, when legitimate, mean something concrete. They tell you a product has been tested, certified, and will break down into harmless organic matter under the right conditions. But even compostable claims can be misleading if companies don't explain where and how the product should be composted.

This is why contamination is such a problem in composting systems. Non-compostable products that look compostable end up in composting facilities, don't break down, and ruin entire batches of compost. That contaminated compost can damage soil and crops when it's applied to farmland. Fake compostable products aren't just useless. They're actively harmful.

Then there's the PFAS issue. Many fiber-based products labeled compostable contain PFAS, forever chemicals used to make packaging water- or grease-resistant. These chemicals don't break down. They persist through the composting process and end up in finished compost, contaminating soil for decades. California's AB 1201 law now prohibits any product containing PFAS from being labeled compostable. BPI, the leading certification body, no longer certifies fiber products with intentionally added fluorine.

The difference between biodegradable and compostable isn't just definitions. It's accountability.

What California Law Says

California AB 1201, signed into law and now in effect, brings real teeth to compostable labeling. The law does a few important things.

First, it requires that any product labeled compostable must be third-party certified. No more companies making up their own standards or relying on internal testing. If you're going to call something compostable, you need to prove it through independent verification.

Second, it bans products containing PFAS from being labeled compostable. This closes a massive loophole. For years, companies sold fiber-based cups, plates, and bags with PFAS coatings, called them compostable, and sent those forever chemicals into compost systems. That's over.

Third, the law prohibits deceptive look-alike products, items that appear compostable but aren't. This is a direct response to contamination problems in composting facilities. If your product looks like it belongs in a compost bin but doesn't meet certification standards, you can't package it that way.

Finally, CalRecycle is developing labeling requirements to make truly compostable products easily identifiable by both consumers and composting facilities. This should reduce contamination and make it easier for people to dispose of compostable products correctly.

AB 1201 doesn't just set standards. It acknowledges that greenwashing has real consequences for composting infrastructure, for soil health, and for consumer trust. The law treats misleading environmental claims as the problem they are.

How to Tell If a Product Is Truly Compostable

So how do you know if a product is actually compostable or just pretending? Look for certification logos.

BPI certification is the gold standard in the United States. If a product is BPI certified, it's been tested by an independent lab and meets ASTM D6400 standards for industrial composting. The BPI logo is a reliable indicator that a product will break down as claimed.

TUV Austria offers two certifications: OK Compost INDUSTRIAL for products that break down in commercial facilities, and OK Compost HOME for products certified to compost in backyard bins. The home composting certification is harder to earn because it requires breakdown at lower temperatures.

Don't rely on vague language. Terms like "eco-friendly," "earth-friendly," or "biodegradable" mean nothing without certification. If a product doesn't display a BPI or TUV logo, be skeptical.

Check where the product is meant to be composted. Industrial composting and home composting are not the same. A product certified for industrial composting won't necessarily break down in your backyard. If you don't have access to a composting facility or curbside program, an industrially compostable product won't do you much good.

For items like compostable trash bags, look for BPI certification and confirm your local composting program accepts them. Most municipal programs in the U.S. do accept BPI certified bags, but policies vary by city. It takes two minutes to check your city's guidelines and confirm.

If you're using compostable food storage bags, make sure you're disposing of them correctly after use. Certification only matters if the product ends up where it's supposed to go.

And remember: compostable products are stable under normal storage conditions. They won't start breaking down in your pantry. Composting only begins when the product is exposed to heat, moisture, and microbial activity in a composting environment. You can store certified compostable products for up to 12 months without issue.

The bottom line is this: biodegradable is a marketing term. Compostable is a standard. If you care about reducing waste and avoiding greenwashing, choose products with third-party certification. Demand proof. And don't let brands get away with slapping green-sounding words on packaging without backing them up.
